Preparing for a bank job written exam in Nepal
Two papers of one hundred marks, both of which must be cleared separately. That structure should shape your preparation and usually does not.
Bank recruitment in Nepal draws enormous numbers of applicants for a small number of posts, which means the written exam is doing a filtering job rather than a qualifying one. Understanding its structure is worth more than an extra month of undirected study.
Two papers, two separate hurdles
The written examination for assistant-level posts at the commercial banks generally comprises two papers of one hundred marks each, for two hundred in total, with a minimum required on each paper rather than on the aggregate alone. Paper one typically covers banking, accounting and information technology. Paper two typically covers management, mathematics and service-related subjects. Confirm the exact composition against the vacancy notice you are applying under, because it varies by bank and by level.
How the two papers are cleared
- 1
Paper 1
Banking, accounting and IT. One hundred marks, with its own minimum.
- 2
Paper 2
Management, mathematics and service subjects. One hundred marks, with its own minimum.
- 3
Both cleared
Failing either paper ends the attempt, whatever the combined total says.
- 4
Onward stages
Shortlisting and subsequent stages follow, per the vacancy notice.
Paper one covers banking, accounting and information technology, carrying one hundred marks with a minimum to clear. Paper two covers management, mathematics and service-related subjects, also carrying one hundred marks with its own minimum. Both minimums must be met.
Where the marks are actually available
| Block | How it behaves | Where to place it |
|---|---|---|
| Quantitative aptitude | Improves fast with drilling. Speed matters as much as method. | Early and daily. It is the most improvable block on either paper. |
| Reasoning | Finite question families, each with a method. | Two focused weeks, then maintenance. |
| Banking awareness | Partly stable, partly current. Regulation and instruments are stable. | Stable material early, current material in a weekly capsule. |
| Accounting and management | Conceptual, slow to build, slow to decay. | Steady from the beginning. Cramming does not work here. |
Quantitative aptitude is where the time is won
Under time pressure, the difference between candidates is rarely whether they know the method. It is how long the method takes. A percentage question you can do in fifteen seconds and one you can do in ninety seconds are the same mark and a completely different exam.
That means the useful practice is not working through problems until you can solve them. It is working through problems you can already solve, until they are fast. Very few candidates do the second kind of practice, because it does not feel like learning.
Building speed rather than coverage
- 1
Fix the tables and the fractions first
Multiplication to twenty, squares to thirty, and the common fraction-to-percentage conversions. This is unglamorous and it underlies everything else.
- 2
Drill one topic to speed before adding another
Percentages until they are automatic, then ratios, then interest, then data interpretation. Breadth without speed is not usable in the exam.
- 3
Time every set from the beginning
An untimed correct answer tells you very little about a timed paper. Put a clock on it from the first week.
- 4
Track questions per minute, not just accuracy
Accuracy alone will look fine while your pace quietly fails you.
Banking awareness needs the capsule treatment
Part of banking awareness is stable: regulation, instruments, institutional structure. Part of it moves: sector developments, rate changes, policy announcements. The stable part rewards ordinary study. The moving part behaves exactly like current affairs and should be handled the same way, with a short weekly capsule of one-line items revised over the following month rather than continuous reading.
Frequently asked questions
- How is the bank assistant written exam structured?
- Typically two papers of one hundred marks each, with paper one covering banking, accounting and information technology and paper two covering management, mathematics and service subjects. Confirm details against the specific vacancy notice, as they vary by bank and level.
- Do I need to pass each paper separately?
- Generally yes, a minimum applies to each paper rather than to the total alone, which means your weakest paper determines the outcome.
- Which subject should I start with?
- Quantitative aptitude, because it improves fastest with drilling and because speed in it takes weeks to build. Leaving it to the end is the commonest planning error.
- How should I handle banking current affairs?
- As a weekly capsule of one-line items, revised across the following month, rather than as continuous reading. The stable regulatory material deserves ordinary study; the moving material does not.
