The forgetting curve is not a metaphor. Here is how to schedule review so that what you learn in week one is still there on exam day.

There is a graph that everyone who studies memory meets sooner or later. Learn something today, test yourself on it across the following days without ever looking again, and your accuracy falls sharply at first, then more slowly. Ebbinghaus drew a version of it in the 1880s using nonsense syllables, and it has survived more than a century of retesting. The precise shape depends on the material, but the shape is always the same: memory leaks, and it leaks fastest right after you learn.

Most exam preparation ignores this completely. A candidate studies a topic thoroughly in week one, ticks it off, and never returns to it until a panicked reread the night before the paper. By then the week-one learning has almost entirely drained away, and the reread rebuilds a thin, fragile version of it that will not survive a hard question. The effort was real. The scheduling wasted it.

Each successful recall earns a longer gap before the next. The intervals here are illustrative, not a law; the principle is that the gap grows as the memory strengthens.

The finding behind all of this is called the spacing effect, and it is one of the most reliable results in the whole of learning science. Given a fixed number of minutes, spreading your reviews across several days produces stronger, more durable memory than spending those same minutes in one block. Same effort, better outcome, purely from when you do it. Very few study tricks are free in this way.

Why spacing feels worse and works better

There is a catch that stops most people from using it, and it is psychological. Cramming feels productive. You reread the chapter, it all makes sense, and you close the book feeling that you know it. Spacing feels worse: you come back three days later, half of it has gone, and the retrieval is effortful and uncomfortable. That discomfort is the point. Robert Bjork calls these conditions desirable difficulties, and the effort of dragging a fading memory back into the light is precisely what strengthens it for next time.

This is why rereading is such a trap. Reading a page you already understand produces a warm feeling of fluency that your brain misreads as knowledge. It is not knowledge; it is familiarity, and familiarity collapses the moment an exam question phrases things differently. The only review that builds durable memory is retrieval: shutting the book and forcing yourself to produce the answer.

How to actually run it with ten weeks left

You do not need an app with an algorithm, though one helps. You need a way to record what you have learnt, a rule for when each item comes back, and the discipline to make each return a recall rather than a reread. Here is the version that survives contact with a real syllabus and a real week.

Setting up spaced repetition from scratch

Ten weeks is enough time to space almost everything at least three or four times. Start now, because the schedule only works forwards.

    Break the syllabus into recallable items

    Not chapters. A chapter is too big to test in one go. Turn each idea into a question you could answer aloud in under a minute, and write the question, not the answer, where you will see it.

    Give every item a next-review date

    The day you first learn something, schedule its first recall for tomorrow. A card, a spreadsheet or a flashcard app all work. The tool matters far less than the fact that the date exists.

    Review by producing, never by reading

    Cover the answer, say or write your response, then check. If you got it, push the next review out. If you did not, bring it back sooner. The gap tracks how well you actually know it.

    Front-load the weak items

    Cards you keep failing should reappear every day or two; cards you always get should drift to fortnightly. Do not waste your limited hours reviewing what you already own.

    Work backwards so that each topic gets one final recall in the last week or two. That final, well-spaced review is worth several early ones.

A fair objection: this is more bookkeeping than opening a textbook and reading. It is. But the bookkeeping is cheap and the alternative is expensive, because rereading the whole syllabus the week before the exam is both more work and less effective. You are choosing between fifteen minutes of scheduling now and a lost topic later.

What spacing does not fix

Spacing keeps knowledge alive; it does not create understanding you never had. If a topic never made sense in the first place, spacing a confused version of it just keeps the confusion fresh. Learn it properly once, then space it. And spacing does nothing for the exam-specific skills — pacing, question interpretation, managing a paper under time pressure — that only full mock attempts build. It is one tool, aimed squarely at the problem of forgetting, and it is very good at that one thing.

Ten weeks is comfortably enough to review most of a syllabus three or four times with room to spare. The candidates who use that time well are almost never the ones who studied the most hours. They are the ones who arranged their hours so that nothing they learnt in week one had gone missing by exam day.

Frequently asked questions

Is spaced repetition the same as making flashcards?
Flashcards are one convenient way to do it, because they force recall and are easy to reschedule. But the method is the spacing and the retrieval, not the cards. A spreadsheet of questions with review dates works just as well.
How many times should I review each topic before the exam?
Enough that recall becomes reliable and effortless, which is usually three to five spaced reviews for most material. Weak or heavily detailed topics need more; things you already half-know need fewer.
I only have three weeks left. Is it too late?
No, but compress the intervals. Instead of day one, four, eleven and beyond, use shorter gaps and accept fewer repetitions. Even two spaced reviews beat two rereads in the same block of time.
Should I space everything, or just hard topics?
Space everything you need to remember, but let the schedule do the sorting. Easy items naturally drift to long intervals and cost you almost nothing; hard items come back often. The system allocates your time for you.
